Chelembra Bank Heist
This was one of the biggest and most sensational bank robberies in the crime history of Kerala. The robbers broke into the vaults of Kerala Gramin Bank at Chelembra in Malappuram district in December 2007 and made away with 80 kg of gold and Rs. 5,00,000. A special team led by P. Vijayan IPS, the then Superintendent of Malappuram sieved through 2 million phone calls and narrowed down on the criminals. Arrests were made in February 2008 and nearly 80 per cent of the stolen material was recovered. This continues to be one of the most successful crime investigations made in Kerala.
