Investigation

Chelembra Bank Heist

This was one of the biggest and most sensational bank robberies in the crime history of Kerala. The robbers broke into the vaults of Kerala Gramin Bank at Chelembra in Malappuram district in December 2007 and made away with 80 kg of gold and Rs. 5,00,000. A special team led by P. Vijayan IPS, the then Superintendent of Malappuram sieved through 2 million phone calls and narrowed down on the criminals. Arrests were made in February 2008 and nearly 80 per cent of the stolen material was recovered. This continues to be one of the most successful crime investigations made in Kerala.

Arrest of Bunty Chor

Devinder Singh, also known as Bunty Chor, was a habitual offender with cases of housebreaks and stealing registered in many cities across the country. In January 2013, he broke into a high security house of an expatriate businessman in Trivandrum and made away with his Sports Utility Vehicle worth Rs. 28 lakh, a laptop computer and two mobile phones. A Statewide manhunt followed and the Kochi City Police team led by P. Vijayan IPS captured him. The suspect was successfully tried and sentenced for his crimes.

Snake Venom Case

City Police team under P. Vijayan IPS, the then City Police Commissioner, was at the helm in busting the first ever recorded case of snake venom smuggling. Till then, there was no known procedure to register or proceed with a case of this nature. P. Vijayan IPS was instrumental in developing a system in concurrence with Department of Forest, which helped the prosecution of cases that followed.

Kodali Sreedharan

Kodali Sreedharan was a dacoit with cases of robbery and murder attempts registered against him. He targeted gold and money, mostly unaccounted hawala deals. He has been evading arrest for long. The special team formed by P. Vijayan IPS laid an elaborate plan to nab him and this marked the end of string of crimes by a history sheeter.

Operation Blade

P. Vijayan IPS launched the campaign against unauthorised moneylending, which has been causing social issues and wrecking many middle and lower class families because of exorbitant interest rates. High success rate of the campaign led to a State-wide drive against unorganised moneylending.

Operation Goonda

P. Vijayan IPS, in his capacity as the Inspector General of Police, Kochi Range, launched to check rising of felonious activities. Operation Goonda is about classifying criminals into three categories – hardcore, active and inactive – based on the gravity and intensity of their crimes in addition to preparing a dossier of criminals and its timely updation. The police coordinated with District Collectors and Revenue Divisional Officers to initiate security proceedings against anti-socials under Sections 107 and 110 of the Criminal Procedure Code. An exhaustive list of persons wanted in various cases and warrantees at all police stations is prepared under this programme.

Mattanchery Narcotic Hunt

Mattanchery, the old trading hub of Kochi, is presently the hub of anti-social activities and drug menace is the most rampant aspect of crime scene. What started off as a fight by P. Vijayan IPS, the then Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mattanchery, against use of narcotic drugs and crime induced by it soon became a State wide campaign against drugs.
